Your local school district supplies the church school enrollment form. Alabama doesn't take a letter in its place.

Save a copy of what you filed with the date. If your local school district ever raises a question about your homeschool, that copy closes it.

• Not knowing which Alabama route you are on

  Alabama has three routes and the paperwork differs. Enroll in a church school and you file the enrollment form with your district yourself, countersigned by the school. Run a home-based private school and the school files enrollment reports. Go the private tutor route and you take on state certification, a subject list, 140 days and a fixed three hours a day, which most parents cannot meet.

• Assuming the cover school filed for you

  Under § 16-28-7 the church school enrollment form is filed "by the parent, guardian, or other person in charge or control of the child", countersigned by the school's administrator and returned by the parent. Some cover schools help with it, and that is their practice rather than the law. Confirm each August that your form reached the superintendent, and keep the copy.
