Can Homeschoolers Play Public School Sports in New Jersey?

It depends on your district — New Jersey has no state law either way, so the decision belongs to your local school.

What the rule says

NJSIAA's 2011 bylaw amendment permits but does not require districts to allow participation. Districts may allow homeschool students to compete provided the student resides in the district. Requires school board and principal approval, demonstrated academic qualification and equivalent education, and compliance with all team requirements.

What to do next

No New Jersey law grants or denies access, so this is your district's call — and plenty of districts say yes. Being told “the state doesn't allow it” is worth checking, because that is usually a description of one district's policy rather than state law.

Ask the athletic director at the school your child is zoned to attend, not the front office. Bring your attendance and hours records, a current grade summary, and your notice of intent if New Jersey requires one. Districts that allow participation almost always want proof of academic eligibility in a form they can file.
