Beast Academy vs Math-U-See

A side-by-side from Art of Problem Solving and Demme Learning.

Beast Academy and Math-U-See solve very different problems, even though both market themselves as elementary math curricula. Families considering both are usually trying to figure out whether their child is ready for above-grade-level challenge or whether they need a curriculum that goes slow, deep, and concrete.

Beast Academy is built by Art of Problem Solving for mathematically advanced or gifted elementary students. The curriculum is delivered through comic-book Guide Books featuring monster characters and an accompanying Practice Book full of puzzles, logic problems, and competition-style questions. Coverage is Levels 1–5 (grades 1–5). The online platform runs $99.99 per year for all levels with sibling add-ons at $64.99. The difficulty is fixed and does not adapt downward — Beast Academy will frustrate any student who isn't already operating at or above grade level. After Level 5, students roll into AoPS's middle and high school courses, the standard pipeline for competition math.

Math-U-See is the opposite of competition prep. Steve Demme's program uses Integer Blocks and short videos to build concrete understanding of one math concept at a time. Levels are named (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta) rather than numbered, and each level focuses on a single operation until mastery. Math-U-See is exceptional for struggling learners, kids with dyslexia or dyscalculia, and any student who needs to see math to understand it. Coverage runs through Calculus. Cost: ~$215 first year, $135 per level after.

These programs are not interchangeable. They serve different students.

The verdict

How to choose

Choose Beast Academy if your child is mathematically gifted or advanced, loves puzzles and logic, finds standard grade-level math too easy, and is heading toward middle and high school competition math (AoPS, MOEMS, AMC).

Choose Math-U-See if your child is at or below grade level, needs manipulatives to grasp abstract concepts, has a learning difference, or is math-anxious. Math-U-See builds the foundation Beast Academy assumes you already have. Some families use both — Math-U-See as the primary spine and Beast Academy on the side for an advanced child who needs extra challenge — but only if you can afford the time and the math hours.
