Standard geometry

A full-year geometry course completed through Mr. D Math's self-paced online program. Video lessons covered points, lines, and angles, triangle congruence and similarity, right triangle trigonometry, circles, area and volume, and an introduction to two-column proofs. The student worked through the online platform at his own pace, and grades came from the program's chapter tests and semester exams. Compass-and-straightedge constructions and a scientific calculator were used throughout.

Honors geometry with proofs

An honors geometry course taken through Derek Owens's distance program, with recorded video lectures and homework and exams graded by the instructor. The course emphasized formal proof, including two-column proofs of congruence and similarity theorems, coordinate proofs, and proof-based work with circles and parallel lines. Additional topics included right triangle trigonometry, transformations, and solid geometry. The honors designation reflects the proof writing required on every test and a heavier problem load than a standard course.

Applied, hands-on geometry

A full-year applied geometry course, parent-taught with Math-U-See Geometry as the spine. The student worked through the video lessons and workbook, then applied each unit in hands-on projects, including scale drawings of the house, a deck-framing plan built on the Pythagorean theorem, and compass-and-straightedge constructions. Tests came from the curriculum, graded with the answer key, and unit projects were graded on a parent-made rubric. Proof writing was introduced briefly, with the course's focus kept on measurement and real-world application.

What a geometry course description needs to cover

Geometry sits between the two algebra courses on most transcripts, and it is the one math course where the teaching approach varies enough to be worth stating. Some courses build around formal proof. Others stay applied, centered on measurement, right triangle trigonometry, and real-world problems. Both earn a full credit, but a reader cannot tell which one happened unless the description says so.

Cover four things: the topic list, the approach (proof-based, applied, or a mix), the curriculum and who taught it, and how you graded. The paragraph structure is the same as any course, covered in how to write homeschool course descriptions. The proofs question is the geometry-specific addition.

Counting the credit

A full year at roughly 120 to 180 hours earns 1.0 credit. Geometry usually lands in 9th or 10th grade between Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, though some families run the two algebras back to back and take geometry after. Either order is accepted. Mistakes to avoid

Skipping the approach. "Completed geometry" hides the one fact unique to this course. Say proof-based or applied.

Listing theorems instead of units. A reader wants congruence, similarity, circles, and solid geometry, not an inventory of every theorem proved.

No grading method. Curriculum tests with the answer key, an online program's built-in grading, or a parent rubric for projects. Name whichever applied.

Forgetting the trigonometry. Right triangle trig inside geometry is worth a mention, since it previews pre-calculus and shows up on the SAT and ACT.

Common questions

Do colleges expect proof-based geometry?
Most standard curricula include at least an introduction to proofs, and that is enough. A proof-heavy course and an applied course earn the same 1.0 credit. The description should say which kind yours was, because the course title alone does not tell the reader.
How do I grade proofs?
Grade the logic. A proof earns credit when every statement has a reason and the chain reaches the conclusion. Most curricula include solution keys with sample proofs to compare against, and instructor-graded programs like Derek Owens handle the grading for you.
Can geometry be an honors course?
Yes, if the proof work went well beyond an introduction or the course added depth like advanced constructions or extra trigonometry. Describe that work in the paragraph. An honors label with a standard description invites doubt.
What tools should the description mention?
