Standard pre-calculus with trigonometry

A full-year course completed through Mr. D Math's self-paced pre-calculus program, which includes a full trigonometry strand. Video lessons covered polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions, trigonometric functions and identities, the unit circle, the laws of sines and cosines, and sequences and series. The student worked through the online platform at about four lessons per week, and grades came from the program's chapter tests and semester exams. A TI-84 graphing calculator was used throughout.

Honors pre-calculus

An honors pre-calculus course taken through Derek Owens's distance program. The student watched recorded lectures, then submitted handwritten homework and exams for instructor grading and feedback. Topics included function analysis and transformations, trigonometry through identities and applications, polar coordinates, conic sections, and an introduction to limits. Semester grades combined homework, tests, and a final exam under the instructor's weighting. The honors designation reflects the depth of the trigonometry work and the limits material covered ahead of calculus.

Dual-enrollment-prep pre-calculus

A full-year pre-calculus with trigonometry course completed to prepare for dual enrollment calculus the following year. The primary resource was Thinkwell Precalculus, with video lectures and exercise sets graded by the program, supplemented by Khan Academy practice on weaker topics. The parent reviewed the online gradebook weekly and assigned semester grades from the chapter tests. The student worked with a TI-84 graphing calculator and finished with the trigonometry needed to place into college calculus.

What a pre-calculus course description needs to cover

Pre-calculus is a composite course: part advanced algebra, part trigonometry, part preparation for limits. That makes the topic list the most important line in the description. Name the strands your course actually covered, function analysis, exponential and logarithmic functions, trigonometry, and any work with vectors, polar coordinates, or limits. Then add the usual math essentials: the curriculum, whether a video program or a parent did the teaching, the grading basis, and the graphing calculator if one was used.

Counting the credit

A full year at roughly 120 to 180 hours earns 1.0 credit, typically in 11th or 12th grade after Algebra 2. If the course included a real trigonometry strand, and most pre-calculus curricula do, title it "Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry." The longer title documents the trig without a separate credit line. Taken junior year, pre-calculus keeps calculus available for senior year. Taken senior year, it is a strong final math credit on its own. Mistakes to avoid

A title the course did not earn. "Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry" needs trig topics in the paragraph. Title and description must match.

Vague topic soup. "Advanced math concepts" says nothing. Name the function work, the trigonometry, and any limits.

Double-counting trigonometry. If trig lived inside the pre-calculus year, do not also list a separate half credit of trig built on the same hours.

Unstated honors weighting. An honors pre-calculus with extra depth can be weighted, but apply one policy transcript-wide and run it through the GPA calculator before you commit to a scale.

Common questions

Should the course be titled "Pre-Calculus" or "Pre-Calculus with Trigonometry"?
If the course included a real trigonometry strand, and most pre-calculus curricula do, use the longer title. Trigonometry is something admissions readers check for, and the title answers the question up front. Make sure the description backs it up by naming the trig topics.
Is pre-calculus required to graduate or get into college?
Most colleges expect three to four math credits and math through at least Algebra 2, so pre-calculus is usually a strength rather than a requirement. For students heading toward STEM fields, it is the doorway to calculus and worth scheduling by junior year.
Can trigonometry be its own half credit instead?
Yes. A standalone semester of trigonometry is a standard 0.5 credit. Just do not count the same hours twice. If trig happened inside the pre-calculus year, it belongs in the pre-calculus title and description, not on a separate line.
Does the graphing calculator belong in the description?
Yes. Pre-calculus leans on graphing, and naming the tool, usually a TI-84 or similar, documents that the student worked the way college math courses expect.
