What the rule says

An appellate court ruled against homeschoolers seeking access to public school interscholastic sports. Grades 9-12 eligibility requires enrollment in the first 15 days of the semester, registration in three regular courses, meeting PE requirements and 80% attendance — conditions a homeschooler cannot satisfy.

Governing rule
N.Y. Comm'r Regs. § 135.4(c)(7)(ii)(b)(2); Bradstreet v. Sobol, 650 N.Y.S.2d 402 (App. Div. 3d Dep't 1996)

What to do next

Public school teams aren't an option in New York right now, so families here build around homeschool athletic associations and leagues, club and travel teams, community recreation leagues, private school teams that accept outside players, and college club teams once a student is dual-enrolled. In practice these are competitive programs rather than consolation prizes.
