Do homeschoolers need report cards?
Legally, almost never. No state requires a parent-issued report card as such. They matter when a third party asks: sports eligibility, umbrella schools, ESA programs, scholarship applications, or a transfer back into a public or private school. That is usually when the request arrives with a deadline attached.
Who signs a homeschool report card?
The parent acting as administrator of the home school. If you are enrolled with an umbrella school or accountability association, they may sign or countersign instead — ask before you send anything, because a card they have not seen is a card they will send back.
What grading scale should I use?
A standard 90/80/70/60 scale is the safest choice if the card is going to anyone outside your family. It is what the receiving school expects, and it removes an argument you do not need to have. The scale prints at the bottom of the sheet so nobody has to guess.
How do I grade subjects that are not tested?
Grade the work you assigned. Completion, quality, and improvement are all defensible bases. Write the basis in the comments so the grade is not a mystery to whoever reads it.
Does a report card replace a transcript?
No. A report card records a term; a transcript summarizes four years of high school credits and GPA, and that is what colleges ask for. Report cards feed the transcript later, so keep copies. If you are already at that stage, the GPA calculator and the credit calculator are the next two tools.
