Homeschool Fox Is Now a ChatGPT App: Log Hours by Chat

· 4 min read

Logging a homeschool lesson is now a sentence you type into ChatGPT. Homeschool Fox passed OpenAI's review this week and is listed in the ChatGPT app directory. Add it once, sign in, and "log 45 minutes of math with Emma" lands on your Homeschool Fox record with the right student, the right subject, and the right time.

I built this because the hardest part of record keeping was not the record. It was the walk from the lesson to the place where the lesson gets written down. If you already have ChatGPT open on your phone, that walk is gone.

What the app does

The ChatGPT app talks to the same account and the same data as the web app and the iOS and Android apps. Nothing new to set up on our side. Once it is connected, you can ask ChatGPT to:

  • Log an activity. "Log an hour of reading with both kids this morning." The entry shows up in your activity log the same as one you typed in the app.
  • Set up a repeating schedule. "Math every Monday and Wednesday at 9 through May" creates a recurring activity with the end date you named.
  • Check what you logged. "What did we do this week?" returns the last few days of entries, newest first.
  • Check progress. "How are we doing on hours this school year?" reports each student's hours, including core hours, against the goal you set for the year.
  • Look up students and subjects, so it logs against the names you use.
  • Add a subject when you confirm you want one that does not exist yet.

The app does one subject per activity. "We did math and reading" becomes two entries, which is how the in-app parser works too, and it is what keeps your subject totals honest when the year-end report comes due.

Three rules it follows so your record stays clean

I spent more of the build on guardrails than on the chat itself, because a wrong entry in a compliance log costs more than a missing one.

It will not guess a student. With more than one student on the account, you have to say who the lesson was for. A single-student account fills the name in on its own.

It sticks to the subjects you already have. Ask it to log "Latin" and you have no Latin subject, and ChatGPT gets your subject list back and asks what you meant. It can create the subject for you, but only after you say so.

It does not count a lesson twice. If ChatGPT retries a request, Homeschool Fox recognizes the repeat and returns the original entry instead of a copy. The duplicate problem was the first thing I tested, since a doubled entry is the kind of error that slips past you until an evaluator asks about it.

How to add it

  1. Open Homeschool Fox in the ChatGPT app directory and click Add.
  2. Sign in to your Homeschool Fox account and approve access.
  3. Start a chat and tell it what you taught.

Your ChatGPT plan decides whether the directory shows up for you. If it does not, the connected apps guide walks through adding Homeschool Fox as a custom connector, which uses the same sign-in and works the same once it is on. The same guide covers Claude, which can connect as a custom connector today.

Connected apps need an active subscription or free trial. You can disconnect ChatGPT any time from Settings, under Connected apps.

What it does not do

ChatGPT can read and write your activities. It cannot see your state's requirements, build a worksheet, or answer a legal question about your filing, because the app has no tool for any of that. Ask it those things and it will answer as plain ChatGPT, with no Homeschool Fox data behind it. The state pages remain the place for compliance questions.

It also will not log anything that is not school for one of your students. "Log my 30 minute run" gets a polite no.

Where this fits

A record is useful when it is complete, and complete when logging is easy enough to do in the moment. We wrote a whole record-keeping guide around that idea, and the hours question comes up in our inbox more than any other. If you teach between work calls, the working-parent schedule depends on capturing lessons as they happen rather than reconstructing the week on Friday.

This is one more door into the same record. Use the app, the website, a voice note, or now a chat, and the hours end up in one place, tagged by subject, ready for the report.
