Side-by-side comparison
BookShark vs Sonlight
A side-by-side from BookShark and Sonlight Curriculum.
Sonlight and BookShark are deeply related — BookShark was launched in 2014 as the secular spinoff of Sonlight, using the same Instructor's Guide format with the religious content stripped out. Families comparing them are almost always asking a single question: which one fits our worldview? But there are real differences beyond faith content that matter, and the choice deserves more thought than "Christian = Sonlight, secular = BookShark."
Sonlight is the longer-established program, in print since 1990, and it covers PreK through 12th grade. The History / Bible / Literature (HBL) cores are the backbone, with Bible study integrated throughout. All-Subjects Packages run about $700 per student per year. Sonlight's Christian worldview is global and missions-aware — students read about cultures and faith communities around the world, not just American Christianity. The book selections lean heavily on read-alouds, biographies, and historical fiction. The community is enormous and the used-book market is robust.
BookShark covers K through 8 (no high school, which is the program's biggest limitation) and was designed specifically for families who wanted Sonlight's depth and book-rich approach without religious content. The Instructor's Guide format is the same, the daily lesson plans are the same, but Bible study is removed and book selections are adjusted. All-Subject Packages run $500–$1,045 per level. The community is smaller but active, and the book lists emphasize diverse perspectives and world cultures from a secular framing.
Both programs require significant parent involvement for read-alouds, especially in the early years. Neither includes math — you'll pair with Math Mammoth, Saxon, Singapore, or similar.

The verdict
How to choose
Choose Sonlight if you're a Christian family who wants Bible study integrated into history and literature, you appreciate the global missions worldview, you need a curriculum through high school, or you want the largest used-book community for resale value. The Christian content is core, not a thin veneer.
Choose BookShark if you're a secular, interfaith, or worldview-neutral family who wants a literature-based curriculum without religious content, you only need K–8 coverage, or you specifically value the diverse-perspective book selections. BookShark is one of the very few comprehensive secular literature-based options on the market — that scarcity alone makes it worth considering for secular families.
