About
What it is
Mystery Science is an inquiry-based elementary science curriculum built around compelling mystery questions that hook students: 'Could a volcano pop up in your backyard?' 'Why do woodpeckers peck wood?' 'What would happen if there were no bees?'
Each unit opens with a short, professionally produced video that poses the mystery and builds curiosity. The teacher (parent) then guides students through hands-on investigations using common household materials — no expensive lab kits required. Detailed teacher guides provide everything you need, and the lessons are designed to be completely open-and-go with zero preparation.
Mystery Science was originally built for classroom teachers and was acquired by Discovery Education in 2024, but it continues to operate under its own brand with a dedicated homeschool membership. The curriculum aligns with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), covering earth science, life science, physical science, and engineering across K-5.
The homeschool membership ($199 for Science, access through June 2027) provides unlimited access to all grade levels. Mystery Writing ($149) was added recently for grades 2-5, and a Science + Writing bundle is available for $259.
Mystery Science is a supplemental science program, not a complete curriculum — it covers science only. But within that lane, it's exceptionally well-executed. Parents consistently report that their kids ask to do Mystery Science, and the investigations create genuine scientific thinking rather than passive content consumption.
The membership uses an expiration model (access through a set date) rather than a perpetual license, which means you'll need to renew if you want continued access. Membership sales in April and August typically offer reduced pricing.
