About
What it is
Build Your Library (BYL) is one of the few truly secular, comprehensive literature-based homeschool curricula available. Created by Emily Cook (co-founder of SEA Homeschoolers), the program uses Charlotte Mason methods — narration, copywork, dictation, and living books — to teach history, science, literature, poetry, art, and geography through high-quality trade books rather than textbooks.
The curriculum follows a historical timeline across Levels 1 through 6, cycling through ancient to modern history over six years. Level 0 (kindergarten) provides a gentle introduction. The program extends through Level 12 for high school.
Each level provides a 36-week teacher's guide with daily lesson plans that take the guesswork out of scheduling. The guide tells you exactly what to read, what to discuss, what to write, and what hands-on projects to complete each day. Math, spelling, grammar, and phonics must be sourced from separate programs.
Teacher's guide PDFs range from $30-$60 per level — remarkably affordable for what you get. However, the total cost includes purchasing the required reading list books, which typically adds $300-$600 per year. Families with access to a good library can significantly reduce this cost.
BYL's book selections are widely praised for quality and diversity. The Charlotte Mason methods are implemented thoughtfully — short lessons, living books, nature study, and picture study are woven throughout. The Facebook community is active and supportive.
Families should be aware that BYL does not include math, grammar, or spelling — you'll need to pair it with dedicated programs for those subjects (Math Mammoth, Saxon, IEW, and All About Spelling are common companion choices).
