About
What it is
All About Reading is a multi-sensory phonics and reading program based on the Orton-Gillingham method. Created by Marie Rippel, the program uses physical letter tiles, word cards, and carefully sequenced decodable readers to teach children to read.
The parent teaches from a scripted Teacher's Manual — each lesson takes about 20 minutes and requires only 2 minutes of prep. The student manipulates letter tiles on a magnetic board to build words, reinforcing the connection between sounds and letters through tactile learning. The program includes games and fluency activities that keep lessons engaging.
All About Reading has five levels: Pre-reading, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4, covering roughly PreK through 3rd grade reading ability. A free placement test on the publisher's website determines the correct starting level regardless of age.
The decodable readers are a standout feature — they progress in lockstep with the phonics lessons, so students only encounter words they've been explicitly taught to decode. This prevents the guessing habits that other programs can inadvertently develop.
The Interactive Kit ($22.95) includes the letter tiles, divider cards, and organizational materials needed for all five levels and doubles for the companion All About Spelling program. All materials are non-consumable and reusable across siblings, which makes the program increasingly economical for larger families.
All About Learning Press offers an unusual 1-year money-back guarantee — books can be returned in any condition for a full refund if the program isn't working for your family.
