The Good and the Beautiful — The Good and the Beautiful

About

What it is

The Good and the Beautiful (TGTB) is one of the fastest-growing homeschool curricula in the United States, founded by Jenny Phillips in 2015. The curriculum combines Charlotte Mason-inspired methods with an open-and-go format that requires zero lesson planning.

TGTB's Language Arts is the flagship program, integrating reading, grammar, spelling, phonics, vocabulary, art, and geography into single daily lessons. Directions to the parent are printed in red; student portions in black. Lessons are designed to be short — typically 20-30 minutes per subject — following Charlotte Mason's emphasis on focused, efficient learning.

The Math program uses a mastery approach with integrated real-world applications and includes video instruction. History is designed for family-style learning where all ages participate together. Science offerings continue to expand.

One of TGTB's most distinctive features is that Language Arts and Math PDFs for K-8 are available as free downloads from the publisher's website. Families who prefer physical materials can purchase printed Course Sets at modest prices ($49-$124 depending on level). This makes TGTB one of the most affordable quality curricula available.

TGTB was founded by a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and includes broadly Christian content with occasional KJV scripture references. The publisher markets the curriculum as non-denominational, and many non-LDS Christian families use it comfortably. Secular families should be aware of the faith integration throughout.

The early elementary levels (K-3) are especially strong. Some families find that the upper-level literature selections and math rigor don't match dedicated subject-specific programs, and it's common for families to use TGTB for Language Arts while choosing a different math program.
