Best High School Homeschool Math Curriculum

21 curricula in this guide

High school math is where many homeschool parents stop teaching and start outsourcing, and that's fine. The best programs for algebra through calculus either teach the student directly through video or give the parent enough support to stay in the game. Transcripts raise the stakes too: colleges want three to four math credits with clear course names.

Saxon remains the rigor benchmark through calculus. Teaching Textbooks is the self-teaching favorite that takes grading off your plate. Math-U-See keeps its mastery approach and video instruction all the way up, and Khan Academy covers every high school course free with practice that grades itself. Every high school math option in our directory is listed below.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What math does a homeschooler need for college admission?

Four years is the standard expectation, typically Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, and then Pre-Calculus or a fourth course such as statistics. Engineering and other STEM programs generally want Calculus. Non-STEM majors are usually fine stopping at Pre-Calculus, and statistics is often the more useful fourth year.

What if Algebra 1 was taken in eighth grade?

It goes on the transcript with the credit and grade, and your student starts high school a year ahead in the sequence. That usually creates room for Calculus or a dual-enrollment math course senior year. Note it on the transcript as taken in eighth grade so the sequence reads clearly.

How do I teach high school math if I cannot do it myself?

Use a program that teaches the lesson, or outsource the subject. Video-based curricula, online classes with a live instructor, and dual enrollment at a community college all solve this, and outsourcing upper math is extremely common. Your job becomes keeping the schedule and verifying the work got done.

Should we use dual enrollment for math?

It is a strong option from about eleventh grade. A community college course produces a college transcript alongside your own, which independently validates the credit. Check how your target colleges treat dual enrollment credit, since transfer policies vary, and confirm your state's dual enrollment eligibility rules.
