About
What it is
Classical Conversations (CC) is not a traditional curriculum you buy off the shelf — it is a structured community program where families meet weekly in local groups for classical Christian education, then continue the work at home during the rest of the week. Founded by Leigh Bortins in 1997, the program now operates over 2,300 communities nationwide.
The program is divided into three stages following the classical trivium. Foundations (ages 4-12) focuses on memory work — students memorize timeline facts, science definitions, Latin vocabulary, math facts, geography locations, and history sentences through songs, chants, and repetition during weekly community days. Essentials (ages 8-12, taken alongside Foundations) adds formal grammar and writing instruction. Challenge (ages 12-18) shifts to Socratic seminars, logic, rhetoric, and rigorous academic discussion across six progressively demanding levels.
Weekly community meetings are led by trained parent-tutors, not professional teachers. The tutor guides the group through the week's memory work and activities, while parents direct the remaining four days of home study. This model creates accountability and social engagement that standalone curricula cannot provide.
Total annual costs typically run $700 to $1,150 per student for Foundations and Essentials (including tuition, supply fees, and materials), and $1,500 to $2,000 or more for Challenge levels. Costs vary by community since individual groups set their own tuition rates.
Classical Conversations is explicitly Christian and requires a Statement of Faith for participating families. The program is deeply community-oriented, which is both its greatest strength and its biggest limitation — families in rural areas may not have a nearby community, and the fixed weekly schedule reduces the flexibility that many families choose homeschooling to gain.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Is Classical Conversations a curriculum or a co-op?
It is both. Classical Conversations provides a structured curriculum delivered through weekly community meetings led by trained parent-tutors. Families then continue the work at home during the week. You cannot purchase the materials without enrolling in a community.
How much does Classical Conversations cost?
Foundations and Essentials typically cost $700-$1,150 per student per year (tuition, fees, and materials). Challenge levels run $1,500-$2,000 or more. Costs vary by community since each group sets its own rates.
Do I have to be Christian to join?
Classical Conversations requires participating families to sign a Statement of Faith. The program is explicitly Christian, and biblical worldview integration is central to the curriculum.
What if there is no community near me?
Classical Conversations requires in-person attendance at weekly community meetings. If no community exists in your area, you would need to either start a new community (CC provides training) or choose a different curriculum. There is no fully online or independent-study option.
