Side-by-side comparison

Classical Conversations vs Memoria Press

A side-by-side from Classical Conversations and Memoria Press.

Memoria Press and Classical Conversations are often discussed together in classical homeschool circles, but they're actually very different products. Memoria Press is a curriculum you buy and teach at home. Classical Conversations is a structured community program where families meet weekly in local groups. Families searching this comparison are usually trying to figure out whether they want a curriculum or a community — or whether they need both.

Memoria Press is print-based, parent-taught (or supplemented by Memoria Academy online classes), and organized into grade-level packages. The First Form Latin series, the classical reading lists, and the scope-and-sequence documents form a tightly integrated whole. Complete packages range $235 (preschool) to $914 (9th grade). The curriculum is intentionally rigid: Memoria Press tells you what to teach when, and the system fits together precisely. The whole program is self-contained — you don't need a co-op or community to make it work.

Classical Conversations is something different. It's a structured weekly community program where families gather in local groups for classical Christian education led by trained parent-tutors. Foundations (ages 4–12) focuses on memory work — students chant timeline facts, science definitions, Latin vocabulary, math facts, geography, and history sentences during weekly community days. Essentials adds grammar and writing. Challenge (ages 12–18) shifts to Socratic seminars, logic, rhetoric, and rigorous discussion. The community day is one day per week; the other four days are home study. Total annual costs run $700–$1,150 (Foundations/Essentials) to $1,500–$2,000+ (Challenge). CC requires a Statement of Faith and access to a local community.

Both are explicitly Christian. The honest difference: Memoria Press gives you a curriculum you can use anywhere. Classical Conversations gives you accountability and community at the cost of fixed weekly schedules and program rigidity.

The verdict

How to choose

Choose Memoria Press if you want curriculum flexibility, you live in a rural area without a nearby CC community, you prefer a fully home-based homeschool, or you want maximum control over scope and pacing. Memoria is also typically less expensive at the elementary level and significantly more flexible.

Choose Classical Conversations if your family thrives on community and accountability, you want weekly social engagement for your kids, you have a nearby community with a strong tutor, or you specifically value the memory-work approach with songs and chants. CC's community structure is genuinely valuable for many families — but the fixed schedule and Statement of Faith requirement are non-negotiable. If a local community doesn't exist, Memoria Press is the more practical classical option.
