About
What it is
Teaching Textbooks is a self-teaching math curriculum delivered entirely through a digital app. Each lesson begins with a clear, patient video lecture, followed by practice problems where every single problem has its own step-by-step video solution. If a student gets stuck, they can watch exactly how to solve that problem.
The current version (4.0) runs as an app on phones, tablets, and computers, with automatic grading, a built-in digital gradebook, and offline mode for up to 6 lessons. A free tutor helpline provides additional support. The parent's role is minimal — primarily reviewing the gradebook periodically rather than actively teaching.
Teaching Textbooks covers Math 3 through Pre-Calculus. A typical day involves the student opening the app, watching the lesson video (5-10 minutes), completing practice problems (20-30 minutes), and getting instant feedback. The pacing is self-directed.
The program is particularly popular with families where the parent isn't confident teaching math, where multiple children need independent math instruction, or where a student is math-phobic and needs patient, repeatable explanations. The Family Plan ($239.95/year for 4-8 children, all levels) makes it especially economical for large families.
Critics note that Teaching Textbooks may run about a grade level behind some more rigorous programs, and advanced STEM-bound students may need supplementation. But for the majority of homeschool families, it provides solid math instruction with minimal friction.
