Khan Academy — Khan Academy

About

What it is

Khan Academy is the dominant free online learning platform in the homeschool world, founded by Sal Khan as a nonprofit in 2008. The site delivers short video lessons, interactive practice problems, unit tests, and a mastery-based progression engine that adapts to the student. Coverage runs from PreK math through high school AP courses, with SAT, LSAT, and MCAT prep alongside computing, economics, history, and grammar.

The core experience is mastery-paced and self-directed. Students watch a five-to-ten-minute video, complete a practice set, and continue when the system confirms understanding. The dashboard tracks skill progress with detailed mastery percentages, and parents can create accounts as 'parents' or 'teachers' to monitor multiple children. The platform is genuinely ad-free and donation-supported, with no upsells inside the student experience.

Math is Khan Academy's most complete subject — PreK arithmetic through Calculus and Statistics, with optional accelerated tracks. Science, history, and reading are present but thinner. The platform is widely used as a math spine by budget-conscious homeschool families and as SAT prep by college-bound high schoolers, where it partners with the College Board for free official prep.

The new Khanmigo AI tutor (a separate paid add-on, around $44 per year for a family) layers a Socratic conversational tutor over the existing Khan content. Khan Academy Kids, a free standalone app for ages two to eight, covers early literacy, math, and social-emotional learning.

Khan Academy is secular and teaches science from the scientific consensus, including evolution and climate change. The platform receives near-universal recommendation as a supplement or budget spine, with the caveat that students who need external accountability or who struggle with long video stretches may need parent involvement to stay on track. There is no affiliate program — Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

Common questions

Frequently asked

Is Khan Academy really free?

Yes. Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit funded by donations. The full platform — videos, practice, mastery tracking, parent and teacher accounts — is free with no ads and no upsells. Only the Khanmigo AI tutor add-on is paid (around $44/yr for a family).

Can Khan Academy be a primary math curriculum?

Many homeschool families use Khan Academy as their primary math spine, especially in middle and high school. It is a complete K-12 math program. Younger students often need more parent guidance, and most families pair Khan with a hands-on or workbook program in the early elementary years.

Does Khan Academy cover language arts and history?

Yes, but the coverage is thinner than math. Reading and grammar (grades 3-9) and US/world history are available but less comprehensive than dedicated language arts or history programs. Khan is strongest as a math, science, and SAT/AP spine.

What is Khanmigo?

Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor built on GPT-4. It uses a Socratic method to guide students to answers rather than giving them away. It costs around $44/yr per parent account (covering up to 10 children) and integrates with Khan Academy's full content library.
