About
What it is
BJU Press is one of the most established and comprehensive Christian homeschool curricula available, published by Bob Jones University since 1974. The program covers every core subject from K4 through 12th grade with traditional textbooks, workbooks, and teacher editions that follow a structured, sequential approach.
What sets BJU Press apart is its Distance Learning option — professionally filmed video instruction where real teachers deliver each lesson on screen. This transforms the curriculum from a parent-taught textbook program into something closer to a virtual classroom experience. The production quality is high, and the teachers are engaging and credentialed. For parents who feel unqualified to teach certain subjects (especially high school science, math, or foreign languages), Distance Learning is a compelling solution.
Complete grade kits for parent-led instruction range from $600 to $1,100 at the elementary level and $1,000 to $1,500 for high school. Adding Distance Learning video increases the cost. Payment plans are available, and BJU Press frequently runs sales. An accredited option through BJU Press Academy allows students to earn an accredited diploma.
The curriculum emphasizes critical thinking and worldview integration — students are taught to evaluate ideas through a biblical lens rather than simply memorize content. Academic rigor is consistently high across subjects, and the program is particularly strong in science and history at the upper levels.
BJU Press is explicitly Christian with a Protestant evangelical perspective. The faith integration is thorough — it appears in science, history, literature, and even math word problems. Secular families will not find this program suitable. The structured, textbook-heavy format also means the program is not a good fit for creative, kinesthetic, or unschooling approaches.

Common questions
Frequently asked
What is BJU Press Distance Learning?
Distance Learning is a streaming video option where professional teachers deliver each lesson on screen. It turns the textbook curriculum into a virtual classroom experience. It's especially popular for high school subjects where parents feel less confident teaching.
Is BJU Press accredited?
BJU Press itself is a curriculum publisher, not a school. However, BJU Press Academy offers an accredited distance-learning school option where students can earn an accredited diploma while using BJU Press materials.
How much does BJU Press cost per year?
Complete parent-led grade kits range from $600 to $1,100 for elementary and $1,000 to $1,500 for high school. Distance Learning video adds additional cost. Payment plans and sales are available throughout the year.
Is BJU Press good for independent study?
With the Distance Learning video option, yes — high school students can work through subjects independently by watching the video lessons and completing assignments. Without video, the program requires more parent involvement, especially in elementary grades.
