About
What it is
IXL Learning is an adaptive skill-by-skill practice platform built around a continuously updated diagnostic and an exhaustive library of standards-aligned skills. Students work through skills one at a time, earning a SmartScore that climbs as they answer correctly and drops when they miss. Coverage spans PreK through 12th grade across math, language arts, science (K-8 plus high school topics), social studies (grades 2-12), and Spanish.
The Real-Time Diagnostic identifies a student's working grade level for every strand and produces a personalized action plan. This is one of IXL's strongest features — it surfaces gaps that other programs leave hidden. Per-skill 'Learn' pages with short video explanations were added more recently, but IXL is primarily a practice and assessment tool rather than an instructional one.
Family memberships are tiered by subject count. A single subject runs $9.95 per month or $79 per year, two subjects $15.95 monthly or $129 yearly, and all four core subjects $19.95 monthly or $159 yearly. Additional children cost $4 per month or $40 per year. A 30-day money-back guarantee applies to annual plans.
IXL is owned by IXL Learning, which also owns Rosetta Stone, ABCya, Education.com, and Vocabulary.com. The platform is secular and standards-aligned to state and Common Core standards.
Community sentiment is polarized. Families value the diagnostic and the breadth of practice problems, especially for skill drill and gap-finding. The most common complaint is the SmartScore mechanic — a single wrong answer can drop a score significantly, which demotivates sensitive students and rewards perfectionism. WellTrainedMind and Cathy Duffy both characterize IXL as 'great for skill drill, not for teaching.' Families who need initial instruction should pair IXL with a curriculum that teaches concepts before using IXL to practice them.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Is IXL a complete curriculum?
No. IXL is a practice and assessment platform, not an instructional curriculum. It works best paired with a program that teaches concepts first. Families then use IXL to drill, assess, and find gaps.
How does the SmartScore work?
Each skill has a SmartScore from 0 to 100. Correct answers raise the score; wrong answers lower it. The threshold for mastery is set high, which means a few mistakes can keep a score from reaching the target. Sensitive learners sometimes find the penalty demotivating.
How much does IXL cost?
Family memberships start at $9.95/mo or $79/yr for one subject. Two subjects cost $15.95/mo or $129/yr, and all four core subjects (math, ELA, science, social studies) cost $19.95/mo or $159/yr. Additional children are $4/mo or $40/yr.
Does IXL offer Spanish?
Yes. IXL Spanish covers Level 1, intended for middle and high school. The depth is modest — it works as supplemental practice but is not a full foreign-language curriculum.
