About
What it is
Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor built on GPT-4. The tutor uses a Socratic method — instead of giving students answers, it asks questions back to guide them toward understanding. Khanmigo integrates with Khan Academy's full content library, so students working through Khan's math, science, humanities, coding, AP courses, and SAT prep can call on Khanmigo for tutoring on the exact exercises they are stuck on.
The tutor is anchored to Khan Academy content, which is also where its limits lie — it works best tethered to Khan exercises. Math is its strongest subject, with science, humanities, and AP/SAT support also strong. Writing is the weaker area, though it has improved since the early 2024 release.
Khanmigo is free for US K-12 teachers via district sign-up and paid for parents and learners. The pricing is $4 per month or $44 per year per parent account, covering up to 10 children under 18. This is exceptionally cheap relative to other AI tutors and effectively sets the price ceiling for the category. Khan Academy itself remains free — Khanmigo is the only paid product in the Khan ecosystem.
Format is web-based at khanmigo.ai with mobile app integration through Khan Academy's iOS and Android apps. There is no affiliate program — Khan Academy is a nonprofit.
Homeschool reviews trend strongly positive. One widely-quoted homeschool parent: 'completely revolutionized our homeschool — perfect for kids who ask why constantly.' A study by myengineeringbuddy reported 23% improvement in concept retention in an 8-week, 12-student study. Late-2023 Reddit teacher critiques noted that early Khanmigo 'fell short' on geometry and had limited role-play characters — both have improved significantly since.
At $44 per year for up to 10 children, Khanmigo is the cheapest credible AI tutor on the market. It works best for families already using Khan Academy as their math or SAT spine, curious 'why' kids who need a dialogue partner, multi-child families (10 children per account is unmatched), budget-conscious families, and AP/SAT prep. It is not the right fit for families not using Khan Academy core content, writing-heavy or humanities-heavy households, or screen-averse families.

Common questions
Frequently asked
How much does Khanmigo cost?
$4/mo or $44/yr per parent account, covering up to 10 children under 18. Khanmigo is free for US K-12 teachers via district sign-up. Khan Academy itself remains free.
Do I have to use Khan Academy to use Khanmigo?
Technically no, but Khanmigo is most useful when tethered to Khan Academy exercises and content. Students working through Khan's math, science, humanities, AP, or SAT prep get the most out of Khanmigo as a Socratic tutor on the exact exercises they are stuck on.
What subjects is Khanmigo strongest in?
Math is the strongest. Science, humanities, coding, AP courses, and SAT prep are also well-supported. Writing is the weaker area, though it has improved since the early 2024 release.
Will Khanmigo just give my child answers?
No. Khanmigo uses a Socratic method — it asks guiding questions rather than giving answers. The design is intentional: students are expected to work through problems with the tutor's help, not have the tutor solve problems for them.
