Side-by-side comparison
Apologia Science vs Generation Genius
A side-by-side from Apologia Educational Ministries and Generation Genius.
Apologia Science and Generation Genius are two of the most-used homeschool science programs, but they sit at opposite ends of nearly every spectrum: worldview, format, grade range, and rigor. Families comparing them are usually deciding between a print-based Christian college-prep curriculum and a video-based secular elementary supplement. They're not really alternatives — they're for different students in different families.
Apologia, founded by Dr. Jay Wile in 1996, is the dominant Christian homeschool science curriculum. The high school program (biology, chemistry, physics, marine biology) is the crown jewel — rigorous, college-prep, and built around modules with on-your-own comprehension checks, study guides, and hands-on labs. The conversational writing style allows for independent student study, which matters at the upper levels. Elementary science (Exploring Creation series) covers astronomy, botany, anatomy, and zoology at $42–$55 per course; high school textbooks run ~$93. Lab kits sold separately starting at $77. The defining feature is a young-earth creationist worldview woven throughout the curriculum — evolution is discussed but critiqued.
Generation Genius is NGSS-aligned K–8 video science (plus Common Core K–8 math) produced in partnership with the National Science Teaching Association. Lessons feature kid hosts in lab settings demonstrating experiments, paired with downloadable lesson plans, worksheets, and hands-on activity guides. The Homeschool plan runs ~$325/year (with co-op groups of 20+ getting 50% off, bringing per-family cost to ~$163). Coverage is secular and follows scientific consensus — evolution, deep-time geology, climate change. Cathy Duffy calls Generation Genius "lively, visually engaging, secular." It's one of the top secular science supplements available.
These aren't really competing for the same families. They're for different audiences.

The verdict
How to choose
Choose Apologia if you're a Christian family wanting young-earth science woven into the curriculum, you need a rigorous college-prep science track through high school, your student can work independently with a textbook, or you value the conversational writing style and notebook-based learning. Apologia is the standard for evangelical homeschool science.
Choose Generation Genius if you're secular or NGSS-aligned, your child is K–8, you want engaging video content paired with hands-on activities, or you're in a co-op (the group discount is significant). For families wanting both K–5 video engagement and rigorous high school science, you'll need different programs at different stages. For young-earth families with elementary kids, Apologia's Exploring Creation series is the natural pick — Generation Genius' NGSS framing won't fit.
