About
What it is
Generation Genius is a video-based K-8 science and math curriculum produced in partnership with the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA). The science program covers every Disciplinary Core Idea in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for grades K-8, and the math program covers Common Core standards K-8. Lessons feature kid hosts in 'kid lab' settings demonstrating experiments and concepts, paired with downloadable lesson plans, worksheets, quizzes, and hands-on activity guides.
A full lesson — video plus lesson plan and hands-on activity — runs approximately 30 to 60 minutes. Parents use the lesson plan to guide discussion and activities, with the video serving as the central instructional anchor. The platform is web-based and plays on any tablet through a browser.
The Homeschool plan runs about $325 per year (around $28 per month). Homeschool co-op groups of 20 or more families receive a 50% discount, bringing the per-family cost to approximately $163 per year. The OpenEd marketplace has at times offered family rates around $95 per year. A 30-day refund window applies. The Generation Genius affiliate program is application-based directly through their site, with commission rates not publicly disclosed.
Generation Genius is secular and aligned to NGSS, which means evolution, deep-time geology, and climate change are presented as scientific consensus. Young-earth creationist families typically skip or supplement with a Christian science curriculum.
Community sentiment from Cathy Duffy and Reddit r/SecularHomeschool ranks Generation Genius as one of the top secular science supplements available. Cathy Duffy calls it 'lively, visually engaging, secular.' Common Sense Media gives strong educator reviews. The most common critique is that videos introduce concepts but don't replicate the depth of lab and notebook work — families needing rigorous high school lab progression will need a different program. Auto-renewal complaints appear on Trustpilot with some regularity; families should disable auto-renew if they only want a one-year subscription.
