About
What it is
Apologia is the dominant science curriculum in Christian homeschooling, known for combining college-preparatory rigor with a young-earth creationist worldview. Founded by Dr. Jay Wile, the program covers elementary through high school science with a conversational, student-directed writing style that makes complex topics accessible for independent study.
The high school program is Apologia's crown jewel. Courses in biology, chemistry, physics, and marine biology follow a traditional sequence that colleges recognize and accept. Each module includes reading, on-your-own comprehension checks, study guides, and hands-on experiments. The Notebooking Journals ($38-$45) provide structured space for narration, vocabulary, diagrams, and lab reports — making the program especially compatible with Charlotte Mason methods.
Elementary science (Exploring Creation series) covers topics like astronomy, botany, anatomy, and zoology at an age-appropriate level, priced at $42-$55 per course. High school textbooks run around $93 each. Lab kits are sold separately starting at $77 and provide the materials for hands-on experiments that would be difficult to source individually.
Optional streaming video instruction, MP3 audio versions, and online testing supplements are available for families who want additional support beyond the textbook. The program is widely used in co-op settings where students gather weekly for labs and discussion.
Apologia teaches science explicitly from a young-earth creation perspective. This is a defining feature, not an incidental one — the worldview is woven throughout the content. Secular families and old-earth Christian families should be aware that the program takes positions on origins, geology, and biology that differ from mainstream scientific consensus. For families aligned with that perspective, Apologia provides some of the most thorough and rigorous science instruction available in the homeschool market.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Is Apologia accepted by colleges?
Yes. Apologia's high school science courses are widely recognized by colleges and universities. The program covers standard biology, chemistry, and physics content at a college-prep level, and many Apologia students score well on AP and SAT subject tests.
Does Apologia teach evolution?
Apologia teaches science from a young-earth creationist perspective. Evolution is discussed but critiqued rather than presented as established science. Families seeking NGSS-aligned or secular science should look elsewhere.
Can students use Apologia independently?
Yes. The conversational writing style is designed for independent student reading, especially at the high school level. The Notebooking Journals and comprehension checks help students self-assess without constant parent involvement.
Do I need to buy lab kits separately?
Yes. Lab kits are sold separately starting at $77 per course. They include materials for the hands-on experiments in each textbook. Some families source individual materials themselves to reduce cost.
