About
What it is
Khan Academy Kids is a free standalone app for ages 2-8, built on the Duck Duck Moose platform that Khan Academy acquired in 2016. The app delivers an adaptive, gamified learning path covering math, reading and phonics, ELA, social-emotional learning, executive function, and creative expression. Kodi the bear is the mascot, and the content includes original songs, books, animated lessons, and creative activities.
The app is genuinely free — no ads, no in-app purchases, no subscription. It is funded by Khan Academy donors as part of the broader nonprofit mission. Format includes iOS, Android, Amazon Appstore, and web, with a tablet-first experience.
Khan Academy Kids was developed in collaboration with Stanford Graduate School of Education and aligns with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework and Common Core standards. The content is secular and worldview-neutral. Common Sense Media named it 'Editor's Choice for Learning' and gives it a 5-out-of-5 rating.
Community reception is near-universal love. The app is consistently cited as the 'free benchmark' that every other PreK app gets compared to. It works as a supplement to TGTB, Memoria Press, Sonlight P4/5, or any other early-elementary curriculum. Screen-time-conscious parents appreciate that the content is high-quality and not engagement-baited.
There is no affiliate program — Khan Academy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
Khan Academy Kids works best for PreK-K families on any budget, as a supplement to a primary early-childhood curriculum, and for screen-time-conscious parents who want quality content. It tops out at 2nd grade, so families need to transition to the main Khan Academy site or another program for older children. Charlotte Mason purists committed to pre-formal-academics in the early years may prefer no app at all in this age range.
