About
What it is
Math Mammoth is a mastery-oriented math curriculum created by Maria Miller, a math educator from Finland. The program emphasizes conceptual understanding, mental math strategies, and number sense over rote memorization and procedural drilling.
The Light Blue Series is the flagship complete curriculum, covering grades 1 through 8. Each grade consists of two worktexts (A and B) that serve as both instruction and practice — the textbook teaches directly to the student with clear explanations, worked examples, and visual models, followed by practice problems. This self-teaching design minimizes the need for parent instruction.
Math Mammoth uses a mastery approach: topics are covered in focused, multi-week blocks until the student achieves solid understanding before moving on. This contrasts with spiral curricula like Saxon that revisit topics in rotation. The program places heavy emphasis on understanding why mathematical procedures work, not just how to execute them.
Digital downloads (PDF) are the primary format at $39.50 per grade (often discounted 20-26% during frequent sales). Printed copies are available through Rainbow Resource, Lulu, and Amazon, typically $25-$35 per worktext. The combination of digital pricing and the self-teaching format makes Math Mammoth one of the most affordable quality math curricula available.
Free placement tests on the publisher's website help determine the correct starting level. The worktexts are dense and text-heavy — they're effective for independent readers but may overwhelm visual learners who prefer colorful, illustrated materials. The program only extends through grade 8, so families will need to transition to a different program for high school math.
