About
What it is
Mystery Doug is a free weekly five-minute video series where host Doug Peltz answers kid-submitted science questions like 'Why do we have eyebrows?' and 'Why is the sky blue?' The videos are entertaining, NGSS-aligned, and serve as a complement to the paid Mystery Science elementary curriculum from the same publisher. Both products were acquired by Discovery Education in November 2020 for approximately $140 million. Founders Doug Peltz and Keith Schacht continued in their roles post-acquisition.
Mystery Doug videos remain 100% free with no ads, no subscription, and no in-app purchases. New episodes ship weekly. Format is web-based with a YouTube channel for the free shorts. The audience is K-5, with a sweet spot at K-3.
The paid Mystery Science Homeschool Membership runs $129 per year per household, providing access to the full lesson library and hands-on activity guides. A Science + Writing bundle runs $259 (a 25% discount). A free homeschool trial is available through June 30, 2026. Bulk group buy discounts (100+ families) are available January through September. April and August are typical sale months.
Both products are secular and NGSS-aligned, which means evolution, deep-time geology, and climate change are presented as scientific consensus. Young-earth creationist families typically skip these in favor of Apologia or BJU-style science programs. There is no affiliate program — Discovery Education sells direct.
Community sentiment is uniformly positive. Mystery Doug videos are widely loved as morning-time, Friday-fun, or 'brain break' content. The Mystery Science full curriculum is praised for engagement and the high-quality video lesson presentation. The main critique from Christian-curriculum families is the NGSS alignment.
Mystery Doug works best for K-5 secular families wanting free weekly science content, supplements to a primary science program, and parents who want kids to develop curiosity about how the world works. The paid Mystery Science membership extends the value into a full elementary science curriculum.
