About
What it is
Singapore Math brings the mathematical teaching methodology of Singapore — consistently the top-performing country in international math assessments — to American homeschool families. The Dimensions Math series is the current flagship, covering PreK through 8th grade with a rigorous, conceptual approach that develops genuine mathematical thinking.
The core of Singapore Math is the concrete-pictorial-abstract (CPA) progression. Students first encounter new concepts through physical manipulatives (concrete), then transition to visual representations like bar models and diagrams (pictorial), and finally work with numbers and symbols (abstract). This three-stage process builds deep understanding rather than procedural memorization.
Bar model problem-solving is Singapore Math's signature technique. Students learn to represent word problems as visual bar diagrams, making complex relationships visible and solvable. This single skill transforms how students approach multi-step problems and carries through to algebra and beyond.
Grade-level bundles (textbook, workbook, and Teacher's/Home Instructor's Guide) range from $123 to $169. Individual textbooks and workbooks cost $15-$25 each. The older Primary Mathematics series remains available at lower prices for families who prefer the original edition. An optional video subscription is available for additional instructional support.
Singapore Math requires more parent involvement than self-teaching programs. The Teacher's Guide or Home Instructor's Guide is essential — it provides the teaching scripts, explanations, and activity instructions that make the method work. Parents who are uncomfortable teaching math conceptually, or who want a curriculum their child can work through independently, may find the learning curve steep.
The program covers PreK through 8th grade. Families will need to transition to a different curriculum for high school math, though the strong conceptual foundation Singapore Math builds makes that transition smoother.

Common questions
Frequently asked
What is the bar model method?
Bar models are visual diagrams that represent quantities as rectangular bars. Students draw bars to represent known and unknown values in word problems, making relationships visible. It is Singapore Math's signature problem-solving technique and a powerful bridge to algebraic thinking.
What is the difference between Dimensions Math and Primary Mathematics?
Dimensions Math is the newer flagship series, aligned to both Singapore and US standards. Primary Mathematics is the older, original series that closely follows the Singapore Ministry of Education syllabus. Both are rigorous; Dimensions Math has more updated presentation and teacher support.
Does Singapore Math require a lot of parent involvement?
Yes. Singapore Math is teacher-led, especially in the early grades. The Home Instructor's Guide is essential for understanding the CPA approach and guiding lessons. It is not a self-teaching curriculum.
What grade levels does Singapore Math cover?
Dimensions Math covers PreK through 8th grade. Primary Mathematics covers 1st through 6th grade. Families will need a different curriculum for high school math.
