Synthesis Tutor — Synthesis School

About

What it is

Synthesis Tutor is a voice-guided AI math tutor for ages 5-11 (K-5). The tutor uses conversational voice interaction to adapt to how a child thinks through a problem, not just whether they got the right answer. This Socratic approach is voice-first — students speak their reasoning aloud and the AI responds, walks them through misconceptions, and adjusts difficulty based on understanding rather than just correct answers. The tablet experience is the primary interface, and headphones are recommended.

The company has an unusual pedigree. Founder Josh Dahn started Ad Astra (later Ad Astra School) with Elon Musk at SpaceX in 2014 — the small experimental school for SpaceX employees' children that became the inspiration for many later 'rigor through games' programs. Synthesis went through a major 2024 pivot: the original cohort-based Synthesis Teams (live group problem-solving sessions at $180 per month) wound down to twice-weekly drop-in 'open hours,' and the company refocused on Synthesis Tutor. The pivot reflects the rapid collapse in AI tutor pricing.

Pricing for individual subscriptions runs $45 per month or $300 per year ($25 per month annualized), with a Lifetime option at $999. The Family Plan (up to 7 children) is $29 per month, $119 per year ($9.92 per month annualized), or $1,499 Lifetime. A 7-day free trial requires no credit card. The Family Plan economics at $119 per year for up to 7 kids undercut nearly every paid math program on the market.

Synthesis Tutor is secular and worldview-neutral. Format includes iOS, iPad, Android, and web, with tablet preferred. Math content covers counting and cardinality, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and early algebraic thinking. There is no affiliate program currently advertised, though community discount codes circulate.

Early reviews (April 2026 Brighterly review, Unite.AI) are strong. Reddit r/homeschool sentiment is cautiously positive but treats Synthesis Tutor as a math practice supplement rather than a replacement for Beast Academy, Singapore Math, or RightStart. Common concerns include limited problem variety compared to full curricula and no human tutor fallback.

It works best for K-5 math practice and fluency, voice-first learners, pre-readers, families with 3+ kids (the family plan economics are exceptional), homeschool co-ops, and struggling math kids who freeze on text-heavy problems. It is not enough for 6th grade and above, families wanting full scope and sequence with manipulatives, text-loving learners, or screen-averse households.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What is the difference between Synthesis Tutor and Synthesis Teams?

Synthesis Teams was the original cohort-based live group problem-solving program ($180/mo) that wound down to twice-weekly drop-in 'open hours' in 2024. Synthesis Tutor is the new AI voice-guided math tutor for ages 5-11. The company pivoted from cohort to AI tutor in 18 months.

How much does Synthesis Tutor cost?

Individual: $45/mo, $300/yr ($25/mo annualized), or $999 Lifetime. Family Plan (up to 7 kids): $29/mo, $119/yr ($9.92/mo annualized), or $1,499 Lifetime. 7-day free trial, no credit card.

Is Synthesis Tutor a complete math curriculum?

Most families use it as a math practice supplement rather than a replacement for a primary curriculum like Beast Academy, Singapore Math, or RightStart. Problem variety is limited compared to full curricula. Some K-5 families do treat it as primary for fluency practice.

What ages is Synthesis Tutor for?

Ages 5-11 (K-5). The voice-first design works especially well for pre-readers and learners who freeze on text-heavy problems. Content tops out at early algebraic thinking — there is no 6th grade and above.
