About
What it is
All About Spelling is a multi-sensory, mastery-based spelling program from the same publisher and methodology as All About Reading. Created by Marie Rippel, the program uses the Orton-Gillingham approach to teach spelling through physical letter tiles, phonogram cards, word building, and scripted parent-led lessons.
The program spans seven levels, roughly corresponding to grades 1 through 7 and beyond. A free placement test on the publisher's website determines the correct starting level regardless of age — many older students with spelling gaps start at Level 1 and progress quickly through familiar material before reaching their working level.
Each lesson follows a predictable structure: review previous material, teach a new concept, practice with letter tiles and word cards, and apply the concept in dictation. Lessons are scripted in the Teacher's Manual, requiring only about 2 minutes of prep. A typical session takes 15-20 minutes.
Individual levels cost $50-$65 each. The Interactive Kit ($52) includes letter tiles, divider cards, and organizational materials that serve all seven levels and double for All About Reading. Over the full seven-level run, total investment is approximately $450-$500, but the non-consumable, reusable design means subsequent children go through for free.
All About Spelling is secular and contains no religious content. The program is especially effective for students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning differences — the multi-sensory approach (see it, build it, say it, write it) reinforces spelling patterns through multiple channels.
The program requires a parent to teach each lesson. Students do not work independently through workbooks — the interaction between parent and child is integral to the method. Families who need a hands-off, workbook-style spelling program will need a different solution.

Common questions
Frequently asked
Is All About Spelling related to All About Reading?
Yes. Both programs are published by All About Learning Press, created by Marie Rippel, and use the Orton-Gillingham method. They share the Interactive Kit (letter tiles and cards). Many families use both programs together.
What ages is All About Spelling for?
The seven levels roughly cover grades 1-7, but a free placement test determines the correct starting point. Older struggling spellers often start at Level 1 and move through quickly. The program works for any age with spelling gaps.
Can my child use All About Spelling independently?
No. All About Spelling is a parent-led program where the interaction between parent and student is central to the method. Students cannot work through it independently — a teaching adult is required for each lesson.
Are the materials reusable for siblings?
Yes. All materials — Teacher's Manuals, letter tiles, phonogram cards, and word cards — are non-consumable and reusable across all children. Only the optional Student Packet (available separately) is consumable.
