About
What it is
Epic! (getepic.com) is a digital children's library with more than 40,000 titles including read-aloud books, audiobooks, comics, decodable readers, nonfiction, and short learning videos. AI-powered book recommendations help children discover new titles. The platform targets ages 2-12 with a PreK-6 sweet spot.
Epic was acquired by Indian edtech giant Byju's in 2021 for $500 million. Byju's collapse in 2024 caused public turmoil and uncertainty, but Epic continues to operate. The previously free at-home option (via teacher invite during COVID) is gone — parents must now pay for home use. Epic remains free for verified educators during school hours.
Pricing for Epic Unlimited (Family) is $11.99 per month or approximately $79.99 per year, supporting up to 4 child profiles. Format includes iOS, Android, web, and Kindle Fire. The app interface is colorful and built around the library experience — children browse by collection, theme, or AI-recommended titles.
Epic is secular but mostly neutral. Some titles lean progressive; content is filterable by age and topic. Strict-content Christian families may want to review the filtering options before subscribing. Epic does run an affiliate program at getepic.com/affiliates, but commission and cookie terms are not publicly disclosed and require sign-up.
Reddit r/homeschool sentiment is strongly positive — 'an instant library of 40k books' is difficult to beat at the price point. Literature-based homeschoolers using Sonlight, BookShark, or Ambleside Online often layer Epic on top for additional reading material and audiobook listening. The Homeschool Elementary Collection and other curated lists are popular features.
Epic works best for voracious readers ages 4-10, literature-based curricula needing extra reading material, and multi-child families taking advantage of the 4-profile structure. It is not the right fit for tweens and teens (the library skews young), families wanting print books only, or strict Christian families wanting heavy content filtering. As a supplement, the value is exceptional; as a primary reading program, it lacks the structured progression a dedicated phonics or literature program provides.

Common questions
Frequently asked
What ages is Epic! for?
Epic! targets ages 2-12. The PreK-6 sweet spot is where the library is strongest. Tweens and teens will quickly outgrow the catalog.
How much does Epic! cost?
Epic Unlimited (Family) is $11.99/mo or approximately $79.99/yr, with up to 4 child profiles included. Epic is free for verified educators during school hours but no longer free for at-home use.
Is Epic! safe for kids?
Yes. The platform is age-filtered and content can be further filtered by topic and grade level. Some titles lean progressive — strict-content families should review the filtering options before subscribing.
Can Epic! replace a reading curriculum?
No. Epic! is supplemental — it provides reading material and audiobooks but does not deliver structured phonics instruction. Pair Epic with All About Reading, Logic of English, or another dedicated reading program.
