About
What it is
Horizons Math is a spiral math curriculum published by Alpha Omega Publications, covering kindergarten through 8th grade (including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I). The program uses a teacher-led, workbook-based format with bright, colorful illustrations that distinguish it from the more austere look of many traditional math programs.
The spiral approach introduces concepts, then revisits and builds upon them repeatedly throughout the year. Each daily lesson reviews previously taught material while introducing small increments of new content. This constant cycling helps students retain concepts over time and prevents the common problem of learning something in chapter 3 and forgetting it by chapter 7.
A complete set for each grade costs approximately $120 and includes two student workbooks and a teacher's guide. The pricing is consistent across all grade levels, making annual budgeting predictable. The workbooks are consumable — each child needs their own set, which means multi-child families face a higher per-student cost than programs with reusable materials.
Daily lessons are structured and clearly laid out. The teacher's guide provides instruction scripts, answer keys, and teaching tips. Lessons typically take 30-45 minutes depending on the grade level. The format works well for parents who want a clear daily assignment without extensive planning.
Horizons Math integrates Christian values throughout the content — word problems and examples occasionally reference faith-based themes. The integration is lighter than some Christian curricula but present enough that secular families should preview the materials.
The program extends only through 8th grade. Families will need to transition to a different math curriculum for high school. The colorful, visually engaging format appeals to younger students but may feel juvenile to middle schoolers who prefer a more mature presentation.

Common questions
Frequently asked
What grade levels does Horizons Math cover?
Horizons Math covers kindergarten through 8th grade, including Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. Families will need a different program for high school math beyond Algebra I.
Is Horizons Math spiral or mastery?
Horizons Math uses a spiral approach. Concepts are introduced and then revisited repeatedly throughout the year, with each pass adding depth. This contrasts with mastery programs that cover one topic exhaustively before moving on.
Are the workbooks reusable?
No. Horizons workbooks are consumable — students write directly in them. Each child needs their own set, which adds cost for multi-child families.
How does Horizons compare to Saxon Math?
Both are spiral programs with constant review. Horizons is more colorful and visually engaging, while Saxon is more text-heavy and includes larger daily problem sets. Horizons covers K-8; Saxon extends through Calculus. Horizons is explicitly Christian; Saxon is worldview-neutral.
