Logic of English — Logic of English

About

What it is

Logic of English is a comprehensive literacy program that teaches reading, spelling, handwriting, and grammar through a systematic, rules-based approach. Created by Denise Eide, the curriculum is grounded in the Orton-Gillingham method and aims to demystify English spelling by teaching the 75 phonograms and 31 spelling rules that govern the language.

The program offers two main tracks. Foundations (Levels A through D) targets ages 4-7 and covers phonemic awareness, handwriting, phonics, and early reading through multi-sensory activities — students see, say, write, and manipulate phonogram cards and letter tiles. Essentials (Volumes 1-7) serves ages 8 and up, delivering advanced phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar for students who need to fill gaps or build a stronger foundation.

The Foundations A bundle starts at $88. First-time buyers getting Foundations plus the reusable Core Materials (phonogram cards, spelling rule cards, and games) invest approximately $227. Essentials with Core Materials runs about $222. The core materials are reusable across all levels and siblings, reducing cost over time.

Logic of English is particularly effective for struggling readers, students with dyslexia, and English language learners. The systematic, explicit approach leaves nothing to guesswork — every phonogram rule is taught, practiced, and reinforced. Parents consistently report breakthroughs with children who plateaued on other reading programs.

The program requires meaningful parent involvement. Lessons are teacher-directed, and the multi-sensory activities need an adult to guide them. Families seeking independent, student-driven learning will need a different approach. The upfront investment in Core Materials can also feel steep, though the materials serve across years and children.
