Subjects let you categorize activities so you can see how time is split across learning areas. They also drive core vs. non-core hours for states that require both.

Core vs. non-core
A subject can be marked core, which means hours logged against it count toward your state's core-hour requirement (math, reading, science, social studies in most states). Non-core subjects (art, music, PE, electives) still count toward total hours.
To mark a subject core, open Subjects, edit the subject, and turn on Core subject. See State requirements for how your state treats core hours.
