ESA Reporting
Keep your Education Savings Account in good standing — deadlines, what to file, and what happens if you miss.

If you take Education Savings Account funds, that reporting is separate from — and usually heavier than — your state's homeschool requirements. Homeschool Fox can remind you before each deadline.
Reporting is not the same in any two states. Some want a quarterly expense report, some want an annual academic report, and some want nothing recurring at all. Set reminders for the state you're actually in.
Arizona — Empowerment Scholarship Account
A quarterly expense report, due the 20th of the last month of each quarter.

A quarter with no spending still has to be filed. A zero report is a report.
What to submit: every ESA purchase for the quarter, itemized against the state's approved expense categories, with receipts.
If you miss it, Arizona publishes the escalation in days after the due date:
- 10 days — reminder letter
- 40 days — ESA card suspended
- 70 days — account terminated, remaining funds forfeited
Arizona ESA students are not classified as homeschoolers under state law. If you had a homeschool affidavit on file, you withdraw it through your county superintendent before joining, and the ESA contract becomes the legal proof of education for that child. The expense report replaces the affidavit as the thing the state actually checks.
West Virginia — Hope Scholarship
Two dates, both in June, and they are different obligations.
June 8 — annual academic report. Required of Individualized Instructional Program students under W. Va. Code §18-31-8(a)(4). Two ways to satisfy it:
- A nationally normed standardized test whose overall mean falls in or above the fourth stanine, or shows improvement over the prior year, or
- A certified teacher's written determination that the student is making progress commensurate with age and ability.
Missing June 8 terminates the account by statute and bars participation the following school year. This is a statutory consequence, not an administrative one — there is no discretion to appeal to.
June 15 — continuing participation confirmation. Renewal is a separate step. Filing the academic report does not renew you.
2026-27 is the first year existing homeschool and private-school families qualify, so a large number of families are hitting these deadlines for the first time.
Texas — Education Freedom Account
No recurring report. Participants in good standing stay enrolled automatically and only confirm they want to continue.
The Comptroller contracts a private entity to audit accounts and eligibility at least annually, so keep your marketplace receipts — but there is no expense report you file on a schedule. Homeschool Fox shows no ESA deadline card for Texas because there is genuinely nothing recurring to remind you about, not because we haven't checked.
Setting a reminder
Open Reports and look for the ESA card for your state. Choose how far ahead you want to be reminded and Homeschool Fox creates the reminders for your current school year, emailing you on schedule. Reminders follow the school year in your settings, so deadlines land in the right calendar years automatically.
Other states
ESA programs exist in more than 30 states, but homeschoolers qualify in fewer than a dozen, and the reporting rules vary widely. Homeschool Fox adds each state's schedule as it is verified against that state's own published rules. If your ESA state isn't showing a card yet, its schedule hasn't been confirmed — check with your program administrator directly.
